In celebration of Heritage Week, Geopark Ambassadors at the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark hosted a photography competition over three categories which seen over 200 entries.

Heritage Week celebrates all things heritage and helps build awareness about the value of heritage. This year Heritage Week ran from August 15 to 23 in the Republic of Ireland. As the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark straddles counties Fermanagh and Cavan, the Global Geopark wanted to get involved.

With over 50 stunning sites across the Global Geopark, it is the perfect location to see a fascinating variety of geology, natural landscapes and historic relics. Major lakes, gently rolling drumlins and winding rivers are set against the dramatic backdrop of spectacular cliffs, rugged outcrops, hidden caves and a fabulous array of natural habitats and species. Bearing this in mind and due to the current Covid-19 situation, Geopark Ambassadors came up with the innovative idea of celebrating Heritage Week through social media by holding a photography competition.

The photography competition consisted of three different categories; children aged 16 and under, 17 plus and professionals. With over 200 submissions the Global Geopark team were fascinated by the different photographs that were received; from beautiful landscapes to stunning animal shots. Videos were then created of the winning photographs and can now be viewed on the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark Facebook page.

The Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark activities programme for the remainder of 2020 can now be viewed at www.marblearchcavesgeopark.com.
