A 27-YEAR-OLD Cavan man was handed a driving ban in Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday after he was found to be driving in Northern Ireland with no insurance and no driving licence while being banned from driving in the Republic of Ireland.

Charles Sweeney, of Bramble Rise, Cavan, was detected by police on May 9 on the Inishmore Road, Lisbellaw driving a Ford Transit van. Police observed Sweeney entering the driveway of a property and reversing up the lane.

When police stopped him, Sweeney was unable to produce his driving licence, and produced his wife’s car insurance.

Defence solicitor Garry Smyth spoke of the defendant as being a married man with four children who had been travelling with his family, and the defendant believed his insurance on the vehicle was on an open driver basis.

District Judge Steven Keown sentenced Sweeney to a six-month driving disqualification and a fine of £300.
