FOR traditional music lovers all over the world, the first week of August can only mean one thing, Fleadh Cheoil nahEireann.

It’s what every young musician works towards all year round and dreams of reaching before firstly qualifying for county and provincial places beforehand.

Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic put a halt to that long tradition last August with no fleadhanna taking place.

This year, to keep the tradition alive and to celebrate the 70th Fleadh Cheoil, Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann came up with the initiative that is Fleadhfest ‘21.

Along with the competitions, every county (and branches worldwide) was invited to create a two-hour production showcasing their talents and telling the story of Comhaltas in their county.

They can all be found on Comhaltas’ YouTube channel. Search for ‘Comhaltas’ or ‘Fermanagh Fleadhfest’ and you’ll find the wonderful programme full of local musicians and singers.

As it became apparent that the normal format of competitions was not going to be possible again this year, the qualifying competitions were held virtually, with the finals – being held live in person outdoors, in accordance with Covid regulations – to be live-streamed from Sligo by TG4 on the TG4 Player, and on Fleadhfest.ie, from August 6 to 8.

Fermanagh Comhaltas is delighted to have six musicians competing in the finals in Sligo next month.

They are Damien McKenna (Ballad Singing, Over-18); Niamh Boyle (Lilting, 12-15); and Shauneen Maguire (Piano Accordion 15-18) – all from Derrylin CCE.

Also joining them are brothers from Lisnaskea CCE, Conor and Ryan Maguire (Drums, Over-18 and 15-18, respectively); and Patrick Tracey, Donagh (Banjo, 15-18) who is a member of Dromore CCE.

We join the county in wishing them all the very best of luck.
