Three communities in Fermanagh gathered on Friday night to raise funds for Marie Curie, following the success of a lantern-focused fundraising and memorial initiative last year.

Building on the success of last year's event, the communities of Belleek, Garrison and Irvinestown gathered for a special lantern display at significant locations in the communities, including Belleek Bridge; The Rusheen Park, Garrison and at Castle Irvine in Irvinestown.

The communities were encouraged to collect a lantern by making a donation in one of a number of various outlets in Belleek, Garrison and Mahon's Hotel Irvinestown.

Members of the public dedicated their lantern to a loved one who had passed away; they were then invited to decorate their lantern and return it to the outlet from where they had collected it before October 1, so that their lantern could be part of the unique lantern display.

Businesses in Belleek, Garrison and Irvinestown were encouraged to display lanterns in shop and office windows in the lead-up to the event.

Between the three lantern events, more than £3,000 was raised for Marie Curie, with a final figure to be confirmed later.

This year saw an increase in numbers taking part. Last year's lantern total saw 120 lanterns in use between Belleek and Garrison; however, this year saw 176 lanterns in use across Belleek and Garrison.

This year was also Irvinestown's first year displaying lanterns, with 70 lanterns displayed on Friday night.

Last year, Belleek and Garrison's lantern event – along with the Walk Anytime Anywhere initiative throughout September – raised £8,500.
