A Fivemiletown youth who purchased a BMW and was saving to buy a new set of tyres has been handed a two-week disqualification for driving with defective tyres.

Jonas Urbanos (19), of Spout Gardens, Fivemiletown, appeared in Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday charged with driving with a defective tyre and failing to produce a driving licence.

The court heard from the Public Prosecution Service that at 2.30pm on April 5, a BMW driving on the A4 Belfast Road at Brookeborough was recorded as displaying tyres below thread. The tyre in question was the rear offside tyre.

Defence solicitor for Urbanos, Michael Fahy, said: “The car had been recently purchased and Mr. Urbanos was saving up for a new set of tyres.”

Mr. Fahy stated his client was aware of his obligation as a vehicle owner for the overall maintenance of the vehicle; he also informed the court that the defendant is currently undertaking an engineering course at the local college.

District Judge Steven Keown acknowledged that Urbanos had entered a guilty plea at the first opportunity.

He ordered a two-week disqualification from driving for Urbanos and handed him a total fine of £200 for the driving offences detected by police.
