A man has been remanded in custody on drugs charges following the discovery of a suspected cannabis factory in Ederney last Wednesday.

Robert Palfrey (41), of Cossington Road, Brimingham, appeared in court last week in relation to the discovery where suspected cannabis plants with a street value of £600,000 were located.

Palfrey is charged with cultivating cannabis at Ardvarney Road, Ederney, possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply, possession of a Class B drug, being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug, possessing criminal property, encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence and dishonestly using electricity in relation to the discovery on October 20.

Two other men who were arrested during operation were released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Palfrey was remanded to Maghaberry Prison until his next hearing at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on November 15.

In a statement released following the discovery, Detective Inspector Shaw said: “We, as your Police Service, are committed to tackling the illegal supply and use of drugs, and will continue to investigate those who profit from the consequent misery and harm.

“I would ask any member of the public who has any information which could be of assistance to police to contact the police on non-emergency number 101.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100 per cent anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

Local politicians commended the police for the discovery and the locals who first reported suspicious activity.

Commenting on the discovery of the suspected cannabis factory new DUP MLA for Fermanagh South Tyrone, Deborah Erskine said: “I commend the Police for their action - for removing drugs from our streets and halting crime.”

Erne North Councillor, John Coyle, welcomed the news that police unearthed a cannabis factory adding: “I commend locals for contacting the PSNI and reporting this suspicious activity which resulted in the find.

“It’s great to see this huge amount drugs being removed from our streets. Drugs are very dangerous and I’m glad to see the PSNI stepping up and protecting our community from this scourge.”
