Yvonne O’Doherty didn’t know it, but she was in for a surprise double birthday treat this week!

The Enniskillen girl – who celebrated her 24th birthday on Tuesday – couldn’t believe it when she was voted ‘Sales Assistant of the Year’ the same night.

Yvonne, who works for her family firm of butchers in Belmore Street, admitted she was totally amazed at winning the title, the first to be organised by Enniskillen Chamber of Commerce.

“I just couldn’t believe it, but I was delighted when my name was called out. It couldn’t have been a better birthday present – it was a real double celebration,” said Yvonne, who thanked everyone who voted for her.

The 24-year-old was nominated by an 80-year-old pensioner, Charles McCreary, from Lisbellaw, who visits the shop once a week.

On his nomination form listing his three reasons for voting for his favourite girl, Yvonne, he wrote: “She drives me to Erneside Shopping Centre, she’s always happy and makes me laugh”.

Yvonne explained that Charles had been going to the family butchers for years.

“Now when he comes in, he allows nobody to serve him only myself! He’s a great character, and after he shops here I give him a lift down to the shopping centre to get the rest of his groceries.”

Yvonne has been with the family firm for just two years since returning from her studies and travels.
