ALMOST 70 people attended a special ceremony at Portora Royal School when a new racing boat was named in memory of a young oarsman who died in a car accident last December.
The new racing four, owned by Portora Boat Club was named ‘Oliver Óg’, in memory of Oliver Scallon who had been a member of the joint Portora-St. Michael’s junior four.
Oliver was one of the first group of St. Michael’s College boys to join the cross-community rowing scheme, which for the past four years has brought together boys from both schools.
Mr. Robert Northridge, master in charge of rowing, described Oliver as an “enthusiastic oarsman who rowed with great skill and obvious enjoyment”.
