Gathering at dusk last Saturday, June 25, hundreds of participants from all walks of life came together at Gortin Glen Lakes, Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty(AONB), for the second Northern Ireland event for Green Space Dark Skies.

Developed by outdoor art experts Walk the Plank, the Green Space Dark Skies initiative was part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, that is currently running until September.

Carrying a low-impact geolight designed by Siemens, the participants – known as 'lumenators' – helped to create a large-scale artwork, celebrate nature and everyone’s right to explore the countryside.

There was no live audience for the specially-filmed event, and its location was kept secret to protect the landscape.

For the event's filming, Enniskillen-based choreographer Dylan Quinn guided the lumenators through walking patterns accompanied by canoeists from Erne Paddlers, Loch McCrory canoe club.

The film's soundtrack, entitled 'Still-ness', has been composed by Londonderry-based electronic artist Ryan Vail.

In reference to the track for the film, a trio of string musicians played at the lakes as the lumenators explored the location.

The patterns created by the geolights highlight some of the symbols and wildlife associated with the region: the fish that swim in the Owenkillew and Glenelly rivers, an oak leaf to represent the forests, and the Green Space Dark Skies logo to represent the 10 peaks across the Sperrin Mountain range and the twinkling stars visible in the Sperrin night sky.

Lumenators were treated to forest and foraging activities from 'the wild women of the woods', Earth Mamas – a rural collective from the north-west who delivered singing demonstrations, and information was provided from OM Dark Skies Centre, Cookstown, who were raising awareness of the Dark Skies environment.

The film, once complete, will also feature local wild swimmers Gortin Dippers, and parkour movement by Omagh-based Urban Motion, and will be available to view for free on the Green Space Dark Skies website soon.
