A Berkshire charity is dedicated to helping people in the area with young onset dementia.

More than 70,000 people have YOD in the UK, having been diagnosed with dementia under the age of 65.

Younger People with Dementia Berkshire (YPWD) is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year as it continues to support those in the county with YOD.

The charity provides age-appropriate and meaningful activities during the working week to enable carers to gain valuable respite.

Activities delivered are based on the interests of attendees and could be singing, indoor wall climbing, running, archery, art, walking or gardening, to name a few.

It also provides one to one support for those who may not be ready to join our group activities, or perhaps need more support during later stages of their diagnosis.

These activities could include, for example, shopping, bowling or dog walking.

YPWD is keen to equip those living with YOD with the knowledge and skills to assist them and therefore deliver education courses.

Admiral Nurses are also part of our team, providing support to our carers.

This support is complimented by the rarer dementia groups run for Posterior Cortical Atrophy, Frontotemporal Dementia and a Carer Support Group.

The charity is now recruiting a community outreach manager to reach out to black, Asian and minority ethnic communities to find out how they can be assisted.
