2022 began unpredictably for farmers with a wet spring until the end of May delaying silage cutting. However from June, the sun came out and it turned out a wonderful year and crops were plentiful whether it was grass, cereals or fruit.

The warm, dry summer weather made it easy for livestock production and harveting crops.

Two of the top dairy and beef farms in the west, John Egerton, Rosslea and Philip Clarke, Augher, opened their gates to members of the British Grassland Society on a summer tour to Northern Ireland hosted by the Ulster Grassland Society and Fermanagh Grassland Club, a real honour to showcase their farm management UK wide.

However the real story of 2022 was the high input costs on farms, especially feed, fertiliser and fuel although farmgate prices improved as well with strong demand for most commodities at the end of the year.

Here, we feature some of the farming scenes of 2022 with photos by John McVitty.
