Local athletes from across Fermanagh were among the 180 pupils who were out in force for the second round of Flahavan’s Athletics NI Primary School Cross Country League.
Taking place in Necarne Estate, Irvinestown, pupils from St. Mary's Primary School, Mullymesker, and Holy Trinity Primary School, Enniskillen competed in the latest round with many young athletes taking the top spot.
In the girls’ race, Kate Kelly from St. Mary's Primary School, Mullymesker, finished in first place, with Meabh Donnelly, Holy Trinity Primary School, Enniskillen, coming in second, followed by Amelia Marsden in third from Fivemiletown Primary School.
This year’s league was launched in October by Flahavan’s ambassador and award-winning athlete, Nick Griggs, who has been passing on his expert training tips to the up-and-coming athletes. Nick holds many U18 and U20 Irish records for middle distance events, breaking the European U20 indoor mile record in February 2022 and claiming gold at the 2021 U20 European 3000m championships. Nick also won Turin's U20 European Cross-Country Silver medal in December 2022.
The qualifying runners will now compete in the third round due to take place at the beginning of February at Dungannon Park, with the hope of gaining a place in the final at Mallusk Playing Fields, on Friday, March 3.
Following the final, the top 20 girls and top 20 boys will be invited to join Flahavan’s Athletics Northern Ireland Junior Endurance Squad. The accolade includes participating in nine training sessions over 12 months to support the personal development of talented young athletes.
