Over 2,500 people have signed a petition to save Enniskillen’s main Post Office in Townhall Street.

The petition is part of the campaign by the local branch of the Union of Commercial Workers to keep the Post Office at its present site.

A review of the office is being carried out by the Royal Mail, with the possibility of its status being changed to an agency or sub-post office.

Enniskillen Chamber of Commerce has also voiced its fears at any change in the position of the Post Office.

The local union sees the review as a “downgrading” of the Post Office and has called on the local community to protect its present location and status.

A Union representative in the Post Office said this week he was “delighted” with the response the petition has received from the general public.

“We have had the petition going for just one week and over 2,500 people have signed it; the public have really got behind the campaign,” he said.

It is hoped that eventually the petition will be handed over to the District Manager of Post Office Counters, Mr. Ray Crea, later this month when he meets Enniskillen Councillors.
