March, 1993. Actor Adrian Dunbar made a special homecoming on Monday to “star” at the official opening ceremony of the new-look Tourist Information Centre in Enniskillen – having been at the BAFTA awards in London only several hours earlier.

The centre, formerly the Lakeland Visitor Centre, at Wellington Road, was refurbished at a cost of £140,000 with grant assistance from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Sunday evening television viewers from the county spotted Adrian on their screens during the awards ceremony in the capital city, when it was announced that the film, ‘The Crying Game’, in which he appeared, had won the ‘Best British Film’ award.

With just a few hours’ sleep, Adrian, who was certainly experiencing “life in the fast lane”, rushed to catch a flight to Belfast, and then hurried home to carry out the official opening ceremony, along with Ulster Television presenter, Kate Smith, a native of Belleek.

The Chairman of Fermanagh District Council, Mr. Caldwell McClaughry, and the Council’s Chief Executive, Mr. Gerry Burns, who welcomed everyone to the opening, joined centre staff, who sported new checked uniforms, Adrian Dunbar, Kate Smith and guests for Monday morning’s reception.

As one of the first networked Tourist Information Centres recognised by N.I.T.B., the county remains at the forefront of tourism development.
