Two new books have recently been published by the Inniskillings Museum.

Just before lockdown and the Covid-19 restrictions, the third book in a trilogy about the Inniskilling Fusiliers in the Second World War became available.

A companion book to 'Globe Trotters' and 'A Long Trail', the third book is entitled 'The Fighting Sixth', and tells the story of the battalion from its formation in Northern Ireland in 1940 to its disbandment in 1944.

Its first active service was in the Irish Brigade in Tunisia, where as inexperienced soldiers, the battalion faced experienced German units.

The battalion then took part in the conquest of Sicily, before moving on to mainland Italy.

It fought at the breakthrough at Monte Cassino.

Then, as lockdown finished, a further book was published. Entitled 'The Enniskilleners strike back', it tells a very different story in time and place.

Set in the turbulent times in Ireland at the end of the 17th Century, the book tells the story of Enniskillen’s prominent role in the events of 1688-1691, and how regiments of volunteers eventually became three regiments in the British army.
