An Enniskillen man who had just one week left of a driving disqualification was caught driving a car by police, a court has heard.

On January 30, police were at the Lough Shore Road, Enniskillen when they stopped a BMW, Enniskillen Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

The driver – Erin Corrigan (22), of Tullyholvin Grove, Enniskillen – was asked to produce his licence, which he did.

However, relevant checks by police showed there was no insurance policy in place, while Corrigan was also disqualified, the court heard.

He was arrested and cautioned. Corrigan accepted a driving ban was in place until February 6, 2023, and that by handing over his full driving licence, it gave the impression he was allowed to drive.

Before Corrigan’s solicitor, Garry Smyth, made his submissions, District Judge Alana McSorley – who issued the driving ban to Corrigan in December – questioned if he understood orders from the court.

Mr. Smyth said Corrigan was aware, and the present situation put him in a very difficult situation.

He said the car was being brought to a yard to get work done in the anticipation of the driving disqualification ending.

Mr. Smyth said while Corrigan did not make admissions when confronted, it was inevitable he was going to be detected.

He reiterated Corrigan had left himself in a very difficult situation, but he had co-operated with police, adding the loss of his licence would be significant but he was “the author of his own misfortune”.

Corrigan was convicted of driving whilst disqualified, having no insurance, and forging/altering a road traffic document.

Judge McSorley told Corrigan: “You get one chance, and one chance only with this court,” before banning him from driving for nine months, and handing downs fines of £650 in total.
