A woman who disrupted a Christmas Eve Mass and shouted at the priest officiating the sermon has been given a two-year restraining order and prohibited from going within 100 metres of the church.

Naomi Wilson (30), with an address of Coleshill Park, Enniskillen, was convicted of disorderly behaviour in her absence in relation to the incident at St. Michael’s Church, Enniskillen on December 24, 2022.

On the day in question police received a report of an aggressive female who was shouting obscenities at the priest, Enniskillen Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

Wilson was arrested and made admissions during interview to police, the court heard. Due to her failure to attend court, she was convicted in her absence and an arrest warrant was issued.

Then on March 24, 2023, after being arrested, police were assisting Wilson in Omagh Custody Suite. A hoodie she was wearing had to be changed. Wilson entered a cell to change, and a female officer stood at the door.

Wilson ran out of the cell and shoved the officer, causing her to fall, and ran off, but she was pursued, caught, and had to be restrained, the court heard.

She was cautioned but made no reply.

Her barrister, Séamas MacGiollaCheara, explained to the court Wilson had previously been unrepresented.

Referring to the Christmas Eve incident, Mr. MacGiollaCheara told the court that Wilson had been unaware of the date of her court hearing, and if she had been it would not have proceeded to custody.

In relation to the March incident, he said Wilson was unaware of the reason for the arrest and was confused at the time and lashed out, and had not had the benefit of legal advice.

Mr. MacGiollaCheara said Wilson was not a lady familiar with the court or custody, and that he did not expect her to trouble the court again. He also said due to Wilson being in custody for the last month, she waived her right to a pre-sentence report.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay convicted Wilson of assault on police on top of the disorderly behaviour conviction.

Wilson received a two-month prison sentence, with time already served, and was ordered to pay £200 in compensation to the police officer.

She also received a two-year restraining order in favour of the priest and was ordered not to go within 100 metres of St. Michael’s Church.
