Susan Doyle, a dedicated volunteer and member of the Fermanagh Down Syndrome Support Group, reflects on a year filled with community support, meaningful connections, and cherished family moments.

Recently recognised for her charitable work, Susan has been instrumental in raising awareness and fostering support for families impacted by Down syndrome in Fermanagh.

Here, she shares memorable moments from the past year, insights on embracing family time during the holidays, and her hopes for a balanced, fulfilling year ahead.

With a heartfelt message to remember those spending Christmas alone, and a personal goal to reconnect with loved ones near and far, Susan’s reflections are both inspiring and timely as we look toward the new year.

Looking back on the past year, what moments stand out to you, and why?

Looking back on this year, one memory that stands out, in particular, was when I was nominated and recognised for the charity work I carried out on behalf of the Fermanagh Down Syndrome Support Group.

During the awards evening, I got the chance to hear all the nominees’ stories, which brought back home how generous the local community supports all charities. Thank you!

How will you celebrate Christmas?

Christmas will as usual be celebrated with family. Family time takes precedence over anything in the world as it’s precious, and I feel blessed to be able to spend time enjoying the festive season.

My uncle, who passed away in May, lived on his own with no family.

So, please, if you can think of anyone who may be on their own this Christmas, send a little card to them - I’m sure it will mean the world to them.

Were there any challenges or surprises this year that taught you something valuable or shifted your perspective?

'Challenges' is a good one! I believe everyone is faced with everyday challenges; life is running at a fast pace, and families are spinning various plates and juggling rotas to try their best to keep on top of the game, and running an organised household.

On a personal note, switch off from work when at home, and spend more time for yourself and your family.

What hopes or intentions are you carrying forward into the new year? Do you have any New Year’s resolutions or exciting plans?

Carrying forward into 2025, my plans are to catch up with family as much as possible, especially my mum, as she is now 89.

I am also hoping to book a holiday to Mexico at some point, as I have a good Fermanagh friend living out there, and it would be lovely to catch up.

I hope to continue to meet up with family and friends, laugh and enjoy the moment - that is my big plan.
