There has been widespread sadness expressed following the death of Mrs. Nora Iris Gordon, formerly of Lislane House, Fivemiletown, who passed away peacefully on February 26, 2022 at St. Macartan’s Nursing Home, Clogher.

Nora was born on July 7, 1931 in Mountnugent, County Cavan on the shores of Lough Sheelin. She was the daughter of John James and Elizabeth Smith, and a sister of John who resides in Scotland.

Her family moved to Kilskeery in May 1948.

After completing a secretarial course Nora took up employment in Taylor Woods Enniskillen. She then met her husband Annett whom she later married in 1954. They subsequently set up home together at Lislane House where they were blessed with four children Marina, Annette, Alexander and Sharon.

Family life was very important to Nora. She devoted her life to caring for her children and continued to provide support and guidance to them throughout their adult life. She was immensely proud of her nine grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits.

As well as being a dedicated mother she was a homemaker and excelled in cooking, baking, sewing and knitting. Over the years her cooking and baking skills were thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by workers on the farm. To this day they still talk fondly and share stories about Nora as they always felt they were treated like family members.

Nora could turn her hand to anything, whether it was helping outside on the farm or painting and decorating in the house. She particularly enjoyed spring time and caring for the new born lambs.

Nora really enjoyed outdoor life and loved spending any spare time in the garden. She was an active member of Fivemiletown Mothers’ Union and Clogher Women’s Institute.

Nora also had a great affinity for the elderly and was involved in the organisation of carers in the community. Sadly, she had to give up this role to care for her husband Annett who passed away in January 1993 after a long illness.

Sadly, her daughter Annette also passed away in January 2012.

Nora’s own health had deteriorated by this time which resulted in her needing full time nursing care. This was excellently provided by the staff of St Macartan’s Nursing and Residential Home in Clogher over the last 10 years. Nora’s family really appreciate the standard of care that she received.

Nora is survived by her brother John, her children Marina, Alexander and Sharon, Sons in Law William, Gary and Mark, Daughter in Law Heather, 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Nora was predeceased by her daughter Annette and daughter in law Deirdre.

Funeral arrangements were carried out by S.R. Elliott. Donations in lieu of flowers for Alzheimer’s Society N.I. and St Macartan’s Nursing and Residential Home.
