Whilst many of us were over indulging during the festive break the boxers from Erne Boxing Club were continuing their training and have made a bright start to the new year as consequence.
2017 was rounded off nicely for the club with Harris Crowley winning the Ulster Nine Counties Boy 4 (Under 15’s) title.
Crowley was pitted against previous victim Charlie Corcoran (Carrickmore BC) in the 52kgs class final in Belfast.
Crowley pressed the action and picked his shots well to win all three rounds on route to a deserved unanimous points decision.
First in action after the turn of the year saw Ciaran Cassidy and Cameron Suttle compete at the Ballahaderreen Tournament in Co Roscommon.
Ciaran Cassidy got a good workout and picked up valuable experience boxing in an exhibition match with Jason Collins (Ardnaree BC).
Cameron Suttle continued his unbeaten start to the 2017-18 season and chalked up his sixth straight win against local boxer Daniel Mee (French Park BC).
Once again Suttle battled his way through another war-of-attrition to out work and ultimately out-punch his strong opponent by a hard-earned unanimous points decision.
Whilst Harris Crowley claimed the last title for the Ernesiders at the end of 2017, his younger sister Caoilfhionn came the club’s first titlist of 2018 with a spirited performance to earn the Armagh & Down open title in Silverbridge, Co Armagh.
Caoilfhionn Crowley was pitted against the much taller Rachel O’Gorman (Tredagh BC) in the Girl 1 (Under 12’s) 39kgs final. Crowley struggled with O’Gorman’s reach in the opener but her constant pressure and good clean punching won her the final two rounds to take a unanimous points win.
Thomas McDonagh also competed in the Boy 2 (Under 13’s) 36kgs class and faced Callum Carragh (Tredagh BC). McDonagh boxed adeptly in the opener and picked his punches well to clinch the session. But Carragh fought back gamely in the final two sessions to out-work McDonagh and earn a unanimous points win.
Erne Boxing Club Head Coach Sean Crowley commented: “The whole club was delighted for Harris, having been beaten in the previous two Ulster Nine County finals by split decision it was a fitting reward for his hard work and tenacity.
“Cameron Suttle continues to make great strides and will step up to open class championship boxing this year. He has developed nicely under the tutelage of Greg Copeland and we are looking forward to him stepping up a level.
“Caoilfhionn Crowley’s success capped a great start to the year for the club and no doubt she’ll be aiming to replicate her older siblings by claiming an Ulster title in 2018.”
The Erne Boxing Club advise that they have a busy month ahead with boxers competing in the Tyrone & Fermanagh championships this weekend followed by a team visiting Yorkshire, England for the Selby tournament.
