The Lakeland Open, which was played in Enniskillen on Saturday and Castle Hume on Sunday, and sponsored by Fletcher Golf, produced some great scoring over the weekend with Harry Thompson claiming the Men’s prize and Joanne Daly winning the Ladies competition.
With over 90 players competing each day over the Enniskillen and Castle Hume courses, the cream of Fermanagh golfers were on display with some wonderful scoring and golfing memories.
As expected on the home course, Enniskillen members dominated the top of the leaderboard after day one, led by James McKenna 44 points with Nicky Wilson and Brian Doran both on 43 points.
Sunday’s scoring was more spectacular, particularly from Harry Thompson who shot 43 points to add to his 42 points on Saturday and win the Lakeland Open.
Coming of the back of a great win of the Captain’s Prize two weeks previously, Thompson continued with his great form of late, shooting 3 under par over the Castle Hume course to romp home a winner by four shots clear of the rest of the field.
Harry who was 4 under par after eight holes, ran into difficulty on the ninth hole where his tee shot finished in the trees and he could only manage a double bogey six. He recovered well on the back nine however, to finish the round with a total of six birdies on his card.
The Enniskillen low man has been a dominant factor recently with a string of high class performances set against a backdrop of short game skills and superb putting statistics.
James McKenna finished in second place scoring 37 points in Castle Hume for a total of 81 points.
Brian Doran also shot 37 points on day two to finish in third place on 80 points. Ronnie Little finished in fourth place on 79 points.
Nicky Wilson won the Gross prize, shooting two under par total for the two days. This was a superb  performance from Nicky who has produced some fantastic golf this year to claim his low handicap status.
The daily winners from Saturday were Michael Keys with a super score of 41 points closely followed by James Lawn with a score of 40 points.
On Sunday, the winner was Ivan Balfour with another superb score of 43 points.  Gary Baxter came second with a super score of 42 points.
In the Ladies competition, the overall winner was Joanne Daly who finished with 70 points with Jackie Crawford second on 68 points. Marina Brownlee was third with 68 points.
The daily winners were Julie Blair on Saturday with 35 points and on Sunday Jenny Scholes took the honours with 40 points.
Congratulations to all the Lakeland Open winners this year and to Mr Stephen Fletcher for his wonderful sponsorship of the competition.
