By the time these two teams meet on Saturday night they should know who awaits them in the Senior Championship final.

Ederney and Erne Gaels go into this game after very contrasting quarter finals. Ederney dismantled the challenge of Belcoo with an impressive display while it took a replay for the Belleek men to finally overcome Tempo.

Ederney have been consistent, finishing third in the league while Erne Gaels have languished around the foot of the table for much of the season. However, they can take confidence from their league form of late where they have only lost one game since July 1, to Saturday’s opponents.

An important figure for Belleek in their bid to reach a second final in three years is the experienced Ryan Lyons.

The forward knows how vital it is for his team to perform to their capabilities if they are to make the showpiece at the end of the month.

However, he is under no illusions of the challenge this young Erne Gaels side face.

“Ederney are big favourites. The way they beat Belcoo and their league position and the players they have, the spine of the team with the McCuskers, Martin McGrath and Connor McGee, they are a strong, experienced outfit.

“You know what you get with Ederney. They are an extremely hard-working team. They have been there or thereabouts for the last number of years and have been at the top end of Division One and are always competing.

“They are a very consistent team and are probably due something in terms of getting over the line and winning a championship.”

And to stop them he knows he and his team mates will have to improve from the win over Tempo.

“We made hard enough work of it in fairness. Especially the first day, we were lucky to be in the game with Aidan Breen missing the penalty. Then our conversion rate was brutal.

“It was probably our best performance of the year on Saturday night but we just couldn’t convert.

“We are a bit naive at times. If we can bring a bit of a level head to the game and think about what we are doing.”

While it has been two years since Belleek played in the Championship final, 12 years have passed since the last time St. Joseph’s appeared, losing out to Enniskillen Gaels.

An 18-year-old Paul McCusker played that day, and now at 30 he is looking for another chance.

His two goals against Belcoo effectively killed the game but knows his team cannot relax against a dangerous Erne Gaels outfit.

“We started well in the first half and got a couple of scores on the board early and had a decent enough lead at half time. But we would have been disappointed enough with the second half.

“Everybody is going to get their purple patch and Belcoo did.

“ But Belleek will be a different proposition, they are playing Division One football and were in a Championship Final two years ago and they will be keen to get back to it.

“They have serious pace in the forward line, so they will be looking to win ball and get it in early.”

Ederney have a mix of youth and experience and will go into the game on Saturday as favourites but McCusker is not taking anything for granted.

“We have been favourites in a few championship games over the past number of years and it hasn’t went our way.

“We haven’t been in a county final in 12 years. We are just looking to get over Saturday night, do whatever it takes to get there and then we will worry about whatever comes after that.

“There is a bit of a buzz about the camp and we are just hoping to get back to a county final.

“I was 18 when we played in the last one and thought that was what it was going to be like.

“I’m 30 now and I haven’t got back to one.”

On Saturday, one way or another both men will be doing anything to reach another final.

Throw in is at 8pm in Brewster Park on Saturday, September 8.
