Derrygonnelly’s Garvan Jones played a key role as his side secured the New York Cup for a fourth successive year with victory over Ederney at Brewster Park on Sunday.

Jones hit five points for the Harps as they went on to see off the challenge of the St. Joseph’s outfit but he was full of praise for their defence as they curtailed a lively Ederney attack.

“We try to limit the other team as much as possible from open play and then you know you have a very good chance of winning the game. It was pleasing that we were able to do that again today.

“In the second half we limited Ederney to three scores, I thought our defenders were outstanding and then at the other end we kicked 2-16 which is very good. We were very economical which was a big thing. We had very few wides in the first half,” he said.

Derrygonnelly had watched Ederney in their previous championship games and Jones says that they targeted their opponents kick outs as it was an area that Ederney were getting a lot of joy in those games.

“We knew the last day that they had a lot of joy from Enda’s kick outs so we looked to put the squeeze on early and push up on the kick outs and thankfully we were able to win primary possession and the break ball and that gave us a platform. We just delighted to get across the line,” he explained.

It’s now on to Ulster for the Harps and Jones is looking forward to another crack at the provincial crown.

“We play the Monaghan champions in a few weeks time and it is going to be a tough encounter but it is something we are looking forward to. We were a kick of the ball away last year from getting to an Ulster final, coming into injury time we were leading and then we threw it away so we can’t wait to get back and give it another crack.

“We know we have the group of players there and we just want to make hay when the players are there. We really feel that we can give Ulster a good go but we are not looking past the first game against the Monaghan champions,” he said.
