Irvinestown Wanderers 4 Killen Rangers 3

Irvinestown Wanderers continued their upward curve as they defeated high flying Killen Rangers 4-3 at the Bawnacre Centre on Saturday.

Leading 3-1, Ryan Beacom’s side looked to be cruising to the points but Rangers, who started the day as league leaders, hit back to level matters.

Wanderers though were not to be denied as Gary Maguire popped up with the winner from a stunning free kick.

Wanderers manager Beacom felt his side deserved to take the points from the encounter.

“We dominated right from the start and scored after 10 minutes but then we conceded a silly penalty although he went in at the break ahead after we scored a penalty of our own.

“We went in at the break knowing we were dominating and then we scored a third but in the last 10 minutes we lost our shape completely. We started to get sloppy in our passing and defending, and we conceded two poor goals in quick succession but Gary Maguire scored one of the best free kicks I’ve ever seen in amateur football to win us the game.

“In the end I’m happy we won as I feel a draw would’ve been disappointing, the three points are crucial as we’re playing Enniskillen Rangers next week so that certainly won’t be easy.”

Wanderers started the game strongly and with ten minutes on the clock they opened the scoring. Ronan Ormsby fired a shot towards goal and Micky Mahon pushed the ball over the line to put the home side ahead.

However, Killen were back on level terms ten minutes later from the penalty spot although the parity only lasted a short time as Irvinestown regained the lead after Maguire converted from the spot to make it 2-1 at the interval.

Wanderers appeared to be in firm control when Eoin McManus added to their advantage on the resumption, getting his head to a Maguire free kick and looping it over the visiting goalkeeper.

Killen though piled on the pressure after this and two goals in a five minute spell looked to have salvaged a share of the spoils for Rangers.

Maguire though was to prove to be the match winner for Irvinestown as he fired a 35 yard free kick over the wall and into the top corner to clinch all three points for the home outfit.
