Despite Fermanagh going zero for two in their McKenna Cup campaign Derrygonnelly midfielder Stephen McGullion has been enjoying life with the Fermanagh panel.

McGullion had a taste of the inter county game under Pete McGrath when he was in the Down man’s McKenna Cup squad in 2016 but he feels that he is better equipped to make a telling contribution this time around.

“I enjoyed it in 2016 and was glad of the chance but I am more mature now and feel I am more able for it. I am really looking forward to it and it has been great so far," he said.

McGullion was pleased to get the start in both McKenna Cup games and although the Erne men were defeated on both occasions he says that the squad is focused on the league, which will begin at the end of the month with a trip to Kildare: "I think Ricey (Ryan McMenanin) got a chance to look at a lot of players in the McKenna Cup. We had teams out who were good enough to win the games and we are disappointed that we didn't but the focus is on the league and we have time now to work on what we need to over the next few weeks."

McGullion has been one of Derrygonnelly's key players over the past number of seasons and has formed a formidable partnership with Ryan Jones in the middle of the field and he is keen to continue his good form with Fermanagh:

"I just want to concentrate on working hard in training and trying to get as much game time as possible in the league. When you get the jersey it is all about holding on to it, but I need to try and get the jersey first," he said.
