There was no shortage of success for local runners at the Ulster Schools’ Cross Country Championships which were held at Mallusk last Wednesday.

St Michael’s Sean Corry and St Kevin’s Ben Warnock both secured individual Ulster titles following storming performances, becoming only the fourth and fifth Fermanagh boys to do so, and the first since Niall Cullen who won the Intermediate Boys back in 2008. St Michael’s also won team gold in the Minor Boys and silver in the Mini Boys.

There was also team medals for both Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and Mount Lourdes on what was a good day for the local competitors.

Indeed, St Michael’s were named top overall boys school at the championships for the first time since 2016 as they edged out St Malachy’s Belfast for the crown.

Sean Corry produced a great run as he claimed gold in the Mini Boys and St Michael’s were also to take the team silver in the event with Tiarnan McManus (8th) and Jack Mullaly (25th) leading the charge. There was also a strong run from ERGS Adam Cathcart who came home in 19th place.

A wonderful run by St Kevin’s Ben Warnock saw him clinch the Minor Boys gold with St Michael’s taking the team gold. Frank Buchanan, Conor Mulligan and Charlie Reihill took fourth, fifth and sixth respectively with Conal Rasdale coming home in 13th spot.

There was further medals in the Minor Girls race with Mount Lourdes taking the silver. Abigail Boyd, Aibhbin Kelly and Niamh Boyle were all inside the top 25 for Mount Lourdes. The highest placed local in the race was ERGS’ Annabelle Morrison who took a fine eighth place.

And ERGS were among the medals in the Junior Boys section as they took home the team bronze. Patrick Williams led the ERGS contingent home with a strong run to cross the line in seventh spot and he was followed home by Will Kennedy, Eamon Greene and Tadgh Hambley. Rees Love of St Michael’s also came home inside the top 30.

There was also a number of other superb performances in the older age groups which earned individual qualification for the All Ireland Championships.

In the Intermediate Girls Sophia Williams of ERGS crossed the line in tenth place while in the Senior Girls Ava Thompson from Mount Lourdes was 15th.

And in the Senior Boys St Michael’s Oisin Cassidy came home in tenth spot.

Meanwhile, there has been six Fermanagh runners who have earned international selection for the London Mini Marathon. This is the largest Fermanagh contingent ever in London teams and includes four from the U13 Boys.

Those selected are Annabelle Morrison, Ben Warnock, Frank Buchanan, Conor Mulligan, Charlie Reihill and Oisin Cassidy.
