NAME: CIARA GRIFFIN

Sport: Tennis

How did you become involved in your sport?

I WAS introduced to tennis at a very early age by my dad as he grew up playing tennis. When I reached the age of four or five, I took part in the Junior lub nights every Friday.

What is it that you love about your sport?

I HAVE always enjoyed squad training, which I joined at the age of eight. From there I became quite competitive and have loved competing in local tournaments as well as travelling to other clubs in Ireland. I’ve also met so many friends through tennis and enjoy the social aspect of tennis as well as the competitive side.

What are your earliest sporting memories?

I REMEMBER always being around the Enniskillen Tennis Club and going up with my dad and older sisters every Sunday afternoon and sitting with mum watching them play in the local tournaments.

Who was, or is, your biggest influence?

I WOULD say my coaches, Matthew and Louise, would be my biggest influences as they have always pushed me to be the best that I could be and instilled confidence and self-belief in me.

Who do you look up to in your chosen sport?

It WOULD have to be Juan Martin Del Potro as he has come back from so many injuries time and time again, and his perseverance and determination is inspiring.

Could you give us an example of what a typical week involves for yourself?

Prior to lockdown I would have participated in the Senior league on a Monday evening, had two and a half hours of squad training and one hour of individual one-to-one lessons. I would also practice with my sister on Sundays and do my own fitness routine at home.

What do you think are the key to being successful in sport?

I THINK the most important thing is commitment and self-belief. I really believe that if you work hard and put the time and effort in you will reap the rewards.

What have been your biggest successes, to date?

My BIGGEST achievement would have to be being chosen to represent Ulster at the Inter-Provincials as I got the chance to travel to Dublin with the team to compete against the other three provinces.

What are your goals for the future?

I HOPE to carry on playing tennis competitively at university and continue to enjoy the sport at Senior level.

What bit of advice would you offer to anybody starting out in your chosen sport?

Just enjoy it and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Just give it a go, as it’s a great way to meet new people.
