THIS is a small glimpse of the sports people and teams that have made the headlines in The Impartial Reporter on this week down through the years.
In football, an 89th-minute strike by Richard Flaherty secured a second Harry Cavan Irish Youth Cup title for Ballinamallard. Flaherty’s late effort sealed a 1-0 victory for the Ducks against St. Oliver Plunkett Boys at Mourneview Park.
Also in football, in 2001 there was another late winner with Conor McGuigan this time the scorer as Irvinestown Wanderers saw off AFC Craigavon to progress to the Irish Junior Cup semi-final.
In 2011, Fermanagh Ladies clinched their place in the Division Three final with victory over Down in Clontibret. Caroline Little was the star of the show for the Erne side, with 3-05.
In pool, the Bush team saw off White Star Bar in the David Stuart Cup final in 1986 to complete a league and cup double.
In 2016, there was disappointment for Enniskillen 1st XV as they came up just short in their promotion play-off against Ards. Skins had a late long-range penalty to snatch the win, but this fell short as Ards claimed a 10-8 victory.
