Fermanagh Manager Joe Baldwin admitted that Sunday’s draw with Cavan felt like a loss after his side conceded four late points as the Breffnimen hit back to snatch a share of the spoils.

Fermanagh had looked to be comfortable in the contest as they led by seven points early in the second half, and then four points with five minutes to go – but the home side produced a strong finish as they rattled off the last four scores of the tie.

“It feels a bit like a defeat. There is a huge amount of positives to take from the game, but at the end of the day you come here to try and get the win. The game was there for the taking and we didn’t see it over the line.

“It is small things and little errors that cost us, and it is disappointing not to get the win,” he commented.

The games are coming thick and fast for Fermanagh with Leitrim next up at Brewster Park this Sunday, and Baldwin is keen get back to training to work on what went wrong.

“You would have been looking to build a wee bit of momentum there today, and psychologically it would have been nice to have got the win over Cavan, but it is what it is.

“We will get back at it on Tuesday night and we’ll emphasise where we went wrong – and the boys know themselves where they went wrong.

“Some of our shot selection today wasn’t what it should be, and obviously our discipline and game management weren’t there either,” he said.

Fermanagh indiscipline proved costly on the day as Cavan full forward converted 12 frees and Baldwin says that it is something that he constantly reminds his players of.

“It is the same things over and over and I just said to the boys there that the definition of madness is me saying the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It is something we must work on.”

However, there were aspects of the play that pleased Baldwin.

“There are a lot of positives from the game; 2-16 is a good score and the short puck outs worked well for us, and we worked it through the hands. It is by no means the finished article, but it is a work in progress.”

Tough test

And he is expecting another tough test at Brewster Park when Leitrim visit.

“We have Leitrim next week at home and it will be a challenge again, and it’s another game that might just have a score in it.

“I told the boys during the week that there would be one score in this game, and Leitrim are another good side and we were lucky enough to get the win against them last year in Brewster Park.

“We have a couple of boys coming back so we’ll see how the bodies are and re-assess and see what we are like next Sunday,” he said.
