Enniskillen started their 2021/22 Kukri Qualifying One campaign with four of the starting team from one family.

The Keys brothers all took their places in the first XV, and scored over half the team’s points between them as they helped the squad start the season with victory over Cooke.

Henry Keys started in the back row, with Angus on the wing. Connor produced a try and a Man of the Match performance from number 13, with scrum half Eddie kicking four conversions in a memorable occasion for the family, and a unique event for the club.

“That was the first time we have ever all played together in the same team, and Henry and Eddie’s first ever game for the first 15,” revealed Connor.

“Angus and I would have played together, and Henry and Eddie would have played together, but never the four of us all together, because there was about five years between myself and Eddie and Henry.

“I suppose growing up we thought it might have happened, and it was nice to be able to do it.

“Our mother and father and grandfather were all up at it. They would have had a big involvement with the club, so it was nice for them to see it.”

Connor admitted that the family connection was not something he gave much consideration to once the whistle blew.

“There was no real pressure on us, and we were just looking to go out and enjoy it,” he said.

“Personally, I didn’t think about it too much, but I suppose we can read each other quite well on the pitch and obviously it’s nice playing with them, and a bit comforting.

“I suppose you notice it the odd time, but I didn’t get caught up too much in it.

“Within the game it is all about sticking to structures that Stevie and Ashley have given us, but it does get a lot of discussion around the Sunday dinner table afterwards!”

The unique occasion was never likely to dilute their focus, which was firmly on starting the season with maximum points.

“We got the win and we got the bonus point, which was the main thing,” said Connor.

“The first half was maybe a little bit scrappy, and a little bit nervy, but that was maybe expected for the first game of the season.

“In the second half we found our footing a little bit and Cooke tired, and we managed to pull away in the end.

“We have a very good squad full of young guys, and there is plenty of potential for a good season and to build for the future.”

The unusual event did however end under a cloud, with both Angus and Henry picking up injuries that will put a temporary end to the brothers repeating their feat in the near future.

“Henry dislocated his shoulder and Angus has done something to his knee, so that was a bit of a dampener,” explained Conor.

“Angus isn’t too bad, and he will be back, but Henry will need to get the rehab in. It could be a long time before we are all back on the pitch together again!”
