Dom Corrigan showed he still has the Midas touch after he led underdogs Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s to the Leitrim Senior Football Championship title with a 1-16 to 0-17 victory over red hot favourites Mohill in Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday.

It was Ballinamore’s first title since 1990 and Corrigan was just delighted to get across the line.

“We had played them in the league stage of the championship and they had beaten us by three points and they also beat us in the league final back in mid July so it was third time lucky for us.

“We knew we had to turn in a big performance to get the better of them and that’s exactly what we did.

“I’m delighted for the boys because they have turned in a big shift over the last three years and they got their just rewards on Sunday night,” commented Corrigan.

And the Fermanagh man said he got to see what it meant to the club to finally get their hands on the Fenagh Cup after a 31 year wait.

“I thought it was a big thing but I didn’t realise just what it meant to them until that final whistle went. There was a sea of emotion, everybody from Ballinamore just streamed on to the pitch. It really meant a lot, especially that older generation who witnessed success during the 70s, 80s and 90s and they thought maybe that they weren’t going to witness any more so for them to be there was great.

“The big thing about it was that bar two of the players on the team none of the team were born when Ballinamore last won a county title back in 1990, that just shows you the length of time it was and they will certainly be hoping that it is not as long again until they win the next one,” he said.

The focus can now switch to the Connacht Club Championship and a meeting with the Galway champions and Corrigan is hoping that his experience of provincial championships in Ulster can help his players as they get ready for the big test.

“I’ve been involved in quite a few provincial club championships in Ulster and there is no stage like the provincial club stage.

“I’m looking forward to it and I know that my experience of having taken teams to semi finals and whatever of Ulster Clubs, that experience will stand them in good stead.

“We are going to prepare for a Connacht Club like any team will, we are going in against the Galway champions who will be red-hot favourites but we will be looking to do ourselves justice in the campaign.

“It is not until the end of November so, the next six weeks we will enjoy getting ready for it,” he concluded.
