Enniskillen Town 4 Irvinestown Wanderers 0

Enniskillen Town ended Irvinestown’s brave resistance with four second half goals as they eased to victory to leave Wanderers rooted to the foot of the league table. Goals from Frank Wallace, Cathal Beacom, Conall Quinn and Adam Beckett were enough to break the half time deadlock and earn Town their first home win of the campaign.

“It was good to get the win,” admitted Town joint manager James McKenna.

“In the first half we were disappointed with the performance.

“We didn’t really play well with the strong breeze at our back. We struggled trying to play from the back, but it suited us better in the second half and we were able to move the ball a lot better.

“Probably a wee bit of fitness told as well as the game wore on, because Irvinestown tired and spaces started to open up for us.

“We moved the ball a lot quicker and a lot crisper in the second half and we came away from the match relatively pleased with the 90 minutes, although there is plenty to improve on.

Irvinestown boss Ryan Beacom was happy with their first half showing, but frustrated they could not see it through.

“I thought in the first half we did very well. Against a strong breeze we absorbed the pressure well and although they did press us and created opportunities, I thought we were more than a match for it.

“I was expecting things to turn around in the second half because we would have the breeze, and if we kept our shape and our discipline we would have been able to pin them back and snatch something out of the game, but unfortunately the wind wasn’t as strong in the second half and we lost our shape and within 20 minutes we found ourselves 3-0 down.

“We lost track of runners and they created the opportunities and took them well. I don’t feel it was a 4-0 game, but Town did deserve their victory.

“We fell apart in the second half and at this level you are going to get punished.

“They had the quality on the pitch, and once we conceded the first goal we were unable to get back into shape and we were a bit disjointed. It is disappointing because over the last few weeks we were starting to find a wee bit of rhythm and getting things into place, but again it’s the same difficulties in trying to find a settled team.”

In a scrappy first half, Town hit the frame of the goal from a corner and Josh Largo-Ellis had Irvinestown’s best opportunity, but the goals did not arrive until ten minutes into the second half.

Town opened the scoring when Wallace headed in Brendan Lilley’s cross, and Cathal Beacom doubled their lead from the penalty spot after Wallace had been fouled. Conall Quinn added a third, and substitute Beckett completed the scoring, bundling the ball over the line from close range.
