Tummery Athletic 3 Magheraveely 1

Two injury time goals from Tummery earned them their tenth consecutive league victory and maintained their 100 per cent start to the season. Magheraveely came within minutes of snatching a surprise draw, but Tummery boss Ryan Hanna claimed he always believed his team would come out on top.

“Both teams tried to play football given the conditions, which was good to see, but I was always confident that we would win the game,” said Hanna.

“Magheraveely have been one of the tougher teams to play since I’ve been at Tummery, so I was expecting a difficult game, and that is exactly what we got.

“I was delighted to get the win in the end. Over the course of the game we limited them to one good chance and a couple of half chances, whereas we had numerous clear cut chances and on another day we would have scored a second goal earlier.”

Magheraveely manager Eamon McGlone was happy with his side’s efforts despite falling short at the death.

“I felt we competed well with them,” he said. “There wasn’t much between the teams over the 90 minutes, they had some very good players which made the difference in the end, but we were pleased with the performance.”

After an even opening to the contest during which Magheraveely’s Andy Little was denied by a good save from McCrory, Tummery edged ahead on 13 minutes. McCaffrey’s through ball set Ruairi Sludden away on goal and as he rounded the keeper he was brought down, with McCaffrey dispatching the spot kick.

Magheraveely responded well to falling behind and Cian Mulligan and Andy Little both tested the keeper before the visitors got back on level terms early in the second half. Peter Hawthorne and Cian Mulligan combined down the right before finding Sean O’Connor who cut inside and drilled a long range effort into the top corner of the net.

Tummery’s Aaron McNulty missed the target when well placed as Tummery went in search of a winner, but Magheraveely were looking dangerous on the break and McCrory was forced into action again to deny Little.

Hanna, Sludden and McGready all had efforts at goal for Tummery, but the decisive goal did not arrive until the 90th minute when Sludden rose to head in McCaffrey’s free kick. With the away team pressing forward for a late injury time equaliser they conceded a third when McCaffrey picked up the ball deep in his own half and spectacularly fired a long range effort into the unguarded net.
