The Leinster Intermediate Cross-Country Championships were held last Saturday in Dunboyne, Co. Meath.

It was to be a successful outing for young Irvinestown athlete Edel Monaghan running for her club, Dublin City Harriers.

While the weather was kind, the 4k course at Cow Park was challenging and twisty.

Edel stayed with the lead pack for the first 2k lap before making a commanding break, where she was accompanied by Wicklow runner Sile O’Byrne.

She maintained her lead to finish strongly to win by nine seconds in a time of 14.23.

Her DCH team were convincing winners of the Leinster title and formed the core of the successful Dublin County winning team.

It has been a very successful season for Edel, who also won the Dublin intermediate XS title in November to add to her Dublin county Senior team medals and national road relay team titles won with DCH.

Meanwhile, Enniskillen Running Club will be well represented at the world athletics cross-country meet at the Billy Neil Playing Fields in Comber this Saturday.

Young Annabel Morrison and Frank Buchanan have been selected on the four-person NI and Ulster U-17 teams.
