Enniskillen Athletic ABC descended to Omagh for this year’s Mid Ulster Championships, with four boxers ranging from 15- to 16-year-olds.

On the Saturday, three of them competed – Donatas Rokis and Joe Shannon lost via split decisions in very tight calls, and on another day could have had the results go their way.

But it was the youngest of the group, Ben Millar, who shone in his semi-final bout, going up against a very tough boxer from Erne Boxing Club.

With a mix of aggression and front forward boxing, he boxed perfectly for the three rounds and managed to get the nod from the judges.

But it was the Sunday and the finals day where Ben really put on an impressive performance, up against a young boxer from 2 Castles Boxing Club who had beaten Ben only a month before in the Fermanagh and Tyrone Championships.

But with a slight change of game plan, Ben executed it perfectly. With fast in and out scoring punches for the first two rounds, then in the final round he turned the style on and led from the front, scoring with a succession of hard-hitting punches, mixing up both body and head shots to leave it in no doubt with the judges, and a clear victory was awarded.

Enniskillen Athletic ABC also had Daniel Balfour competing in the final for his weight class. He was drawn against the favourite and the hard-hitting boxer from Clonoe Boxing Club.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t Daniel’s day and he came up short, but he made a fantastic showing of himself by having to make his opponent work really hard to get his win.

Enniskillen Athletic ABC head coach Mark Gaffney said he was pleased that the lads got some extra competition experience, adding: “Whilst some of the results didn’t go our way, it’s a big learning curve for the guys. But Ben was fantastic and he is now only one win away from competing in the All Ireland National Finals.”

Also a big well dowe to fellow Fermanagh boxing club Erne ABC on their boxer, Ciaran Cassidy, and his Mid Ulster title.
