Derrygonnelly 1-13 Roslea 1-08

Derrygonnelly made it two wins out of two in the Club Players’ Competition with a 1-13 to 1-08 win at home to Roslea on Sunday.

The Shamrocks had made a bright start to the contest when they hit the back of the net early on through a Shane Lynch penalty but by the break the Harps had edged ahead, 0-08 to 1-02.

And although the second half was a scrappy affair, Derrygonnelly were able to extend their advantage out further to ease their way to the spoils.

Harps joint manager Mick Glynn feels there is still plenty for his side to work on despite making it back to back wins.

“It was a hard, physical game which you always get with Roslea. We had a poor start but recovered well and tagged on a few scores after conceding an early goal.

“The game became disjointed in the second half and there is a lot of room for improvement,” he stated.

Roslea came into the game on the back of defeat to Devenish last week but they got off to a flying start as Adam Callaghan slotted over a free before they were awarded a penalty for the ball being lifted off the ground in the small square. Lynch stepped up and dispatched the spot kick to the net and the Shamrocks had an early advantage.

However, Derrgonnelly soon started to grow into the game with Connor McGovern an influential figure in the full forward line.

McGovern landed four points in the first half, including two frees and a mark, while substitute Paul Ward, who replaced the injured Gavin McGovern, also chipped in with a brace.

With Stephen Gilroy also among the scores the Harps went in at the break with a three point lead.

Derrygonnelly continued to stretch their lead in the second half with Gilroy, Ward and Leigh Jones who slotted over a fine point from the right all adding scores.

And they then grabbed a goal as good work by Oisin Smyth released Ward who tucked the ball to the net.

It was an eventful afternoon for Ward who was dismissed as the Harps were reduced to 14 men and Roslea did rattle over a number of points from Conor Quigley frees.

A disjointed second half though saw Derrygonnelly always able to maintain a cushion as they finished up five point victors at the finish.
