Enniskillen Athletic Boxing Club’s Conor McDonagh became Nine Counties Novice Champion as he claimed his first title.

Over two weekends, he out-boxed all of his opponents in his weight class with some fine boxing to land the title.

In his quarter-final bout against an opponent from Dungannon Boxing Club, his smooth transitions and his ability to slide in and out of range, countering his opponent with every attack, gave him a unanimous decision win.

His semi-final took place a day later against a lad fresh off a first-round stoppage from Lisburn.

Conor really turned up his boxing abilities with some heavy shots throughout the first and second round, and the referee had no choice but to stop the bout and award Conor a third-round stoppage.

On to the final last weekend, and he was up against the favourite from Lesley Hall, Belfast. But again, like the previous two bouts, Conor excelled in his shot selections and showed some very clever boxing knowledge to outwit his opponent to again see another unanimous decision win to claim the championship and the gold medal.

Also competing in Dublin the same weekend in Europe’s biggest female boxing cup, Tegan Chmelevskis, Orlagh McGoldrick and Cora Corrigan represented Enniskillen against some of the best female boxers Europe has to offer.

Cora won her semi-final against a very tough and durable competitor from Cork, but with her heavy attacks and cleaner boxing, she was awarded a split decision win.

Unfortunately, she came up short in the final against England’s National Champion, and a boxer with much more experience.

Orlagh had a straight final against Esker Boxing Club in her first ever competitive bout. After winning the first round she had to retire due to an ongoing nose injury, but this has set her up now to move on and compete confidently for the rest of the season.

The club’s youngest female boxer, Tegan, competed in two exhibition bouts and was the standout boxer amongst all over the underage boxers.

Roll on next year when she’s old enough to compete properly for the club.

Big things ahead for all the girls.
