Rosario YC II 1 Enniskillen Rangers 0

Enniskillen Rangers made their exit from the fonaCAB Junior Cup following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat away to Rosario YC II.

The ’Gers fell behind early in the second half and although they pressed for an equaliser, hitting the woodwork twice, they could not find the goal they needed as it finished 1-0.

“In terms of the the game, it was very even and one goal was always going to win it,” said ’Gers boss Michael Kerr.

“In fairness to them, they were a good side. They were very well organised and defended well and I’ve no complaints about the result. We huffed and puffed without really creating anything clear-cut.

“I’m disappointed to have lost, because we had aspirations of winning the cup but it was not to be and we’ll just look forward now to our next three league games,” he said.

Rangers did start the game well and Stuart Rainey forced the goalkeeper into a save after only 30 seconds.

However, it was the Rangers goalkeeper Joel Peden who was the busier in the opening 45 minutes.

After ten minutes he was called into action, making a good save before following up with another stop from the rebound and when the ball again broke to a home player in the box, he hit the post with the ball eventually cleared for a corner.

Peden was called into action once more on the quarter of an hour mark to pull off another fine stop as the home side pushed on in search of the opener.

The game though settled into a midfield battle after this, and at the break it remained 0-0.

The decisive moment of the contest though arrived three minutes into the second half as Rangers got caught out of position at the back, and when the ball was cut back McFlynn was there to slot the ball home.

From this, Rangers went on to dominate. Rainey was released down the left and cut on to the right only to see his effort hit the post.

Soon after, Connor Rippey clipped a ball to the back post where it was met by Jason Cluff, but his header was bundled on to the post by a defender before being cleared for a corner.

Rainey also had a shot that hit the side-netting as the away side pushed to make it 1-1.

The game finished with Rangers having three consecutive corners, but Rosario defended as if their lives depended on it as they held on for the win and progression to the next round.
