Irvinestown Wanderers 7 Enniskillen Galaxy 2

Irvinestown Wanderers made it two wins in two since the winter break as they swept aside Enniskillen Galaxy 7-2 at the Bawnacre Centre on Saturday.

The Division Two leaders hit the ground running with a goal inside two minutes from Joey Millar who finished neatly to score the first of nine goals in the game.

Dwayne Carleton added a second not long after when he met Gary Maguire’s corner with a near-post header that came off the crossbar and bounced in.

Gary Maguire added two more before the half time whistle, the second one coming from a quick free-kick that was curled into the bottom left corner.

Maguire was amongst the goals shortly into the second half as his shot took a fortuitous deflection to make it 5-0 and assert a commanding lead with over half an hour to play.

The goals kept coming for a rampant Irvinestown as Millar found his second when he headed home inside the box from Caolan Ward’s cross.

Haydn Love pulled one back for the away side with a left-footed strike from 20 yards that flew into the top right corner.

Substitute Barry McIntyre made it 6-2 before 15-year-old Matty McDermott was played through on goal and dinked the Galaxy goalkeeper to wrap up the scoring and a convincing win for Darren Higginbotham’s team.

After the match Wanderers manager Higginbotham said: “Naturally delighted to get three important points at this stage of the season, it’s all about points but we are giving good performances also.

“The boys trained hard over the Christmas period and are currently reaping the rewards of that. Saturday was difficult, especially the conditions, the lads made the most of it and they carried out the gameplan that we had which is positive.

“Now it’s about getting back to training for a difficult game against Lisnarick who have found some form and got a good result on Saturday. We will have to be at our best and we want another three points like any other game, but we have to prepare and approach the game correctly.”

With Irvinestown home to Lisnarick this weekend, Enniskillen Galaxy will be looking to pick up three points in a massive clash at home to Maguiresbridge.

Daniel McIntyre’s side sit five points adrift at the bottom of Division Two, but a win could cut the gap to two points between them and seventh-placed Maguiresbridge.
