Portora Boat Club’s Women’s quad competed at Lagan Scullers 3,000m time trial in Belfast on Saturday.
Stroked by Women’s Captain Helen Hughes Flanagan, they finished second in a four-boat competition.
Sculling in a men’s-size boat, kindly lent by Lagan Scullers Club, the quad completed the course in a Masters adjusted time of 14min 44sec at 28 strokes per minute.
Along the way they beat crews from Portadown and Lagan but Belfast Boat Club’s younger crew had a point to prove after being beaten by Portora’s quad six weeks ago, and on home water they stormed to victory.
This brings to an end to the time trial winter season – from now on, side-by-side racing takes place in regattas all across Ireland from April until September.
Women’s coach Simon Dickie was very happy: “The winter has been a big step forward. We have raced and beaten some of the best in Ireland and everyone who has wanted to compete has taken their chance.
“Now we need to get the best from our great female athletes and equally importantly, keep absolutely everyone involved.”
