Fermanagh Ladies manager, James Daly, has his sights set on reaching two finals this summer as his players get their Ulster Junior Championship campaign underway this Sunday.

Fermanagh host Down in Tempo and it with the Junior All-Ireland series not too far away either, the Ulster campaign is an opportunity to gain some momentum for Fermanagh who were beaten in last year’s decider by Antrim after a replay.

“You are looking to get to two finals. You are looking to get to an Ulster final and you are looking to get to an All-Ireland final and winning both. That’s your target,” said Daly.

“I think the team is capable of doing it. There’s a lot of teams think they are capable of doing it. Definitely three or four.

“But we’re setting our goal to get to an Ulster final and it starts off on Sunday.

“And it’s about trying to gain a wee bit of momentum going into the summer, going into the All-Ireland series and pushing on from there.”

Down, who played Intermediate football last year, are favourites to win the Junior Championship according to Daly: “They are a formidable side, but they are down for a reason because they struggled in Intermediate.

“They are down into Junior, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”

Fermanagh’s last competitive outing saw the narrowly lose out to Leitrim in the Division Four league semi-final. Since then, the squad have been working hard on ironing out the kinks for the Down game.

“We have played a couple of challenge matches now since Leitrim and we have been trying to iron out some of the kinks and it has been going pretty good.

“And it’s going to be a tough game but no matter what happens on Sunday we are thinking we’ll hopefully get a chance to play Down again somewhere along the way, so it should stand to us.”

Ball retention and transitional play were some of the aspects Daly was looking at his side to be better at: “A big thing when we looked back at the four minutes of injury time against Leitrim that day we were a point up and there was four minutes of injury time and we won the ball back four times and couldn’t get the ball out of our own half.

“And it was unforced errors that put ourselves under pressure making passes we didn’t need to do.

“And it’s just trying to get the girls making better decisions and if you look back at those four minutes, we should have been in a league final, but we found a way of getting beat.”

And Daly is happy with how his players have responded and knows they are looking forward to the game on Sunday.

“Things are going good. We’ve been working on things we weren’t good at in that Leitrim game and there’s a good buzz in the camp and looking forward to the championship.

“We have a few niggly injuries possibly going into the game on Sunday, so we just have to see how it pans out, but we are happy where we are at.”

Fermanagh take on Down in Tempo on April 30 at 2pm.
