The Cumann na mBunscol Mini Sevens finals day took place in Emmett Park, Lisnaskea on Thursday past with an entertaining feast of football on show.

Holy Trinity P.S. Enniskillen were victorious in the boys’ competition with St. Mary’s P.S. Teemore lifting the girls’ title.

There were six boys and six girls teams who qualified for finals day after a number of qualifying blitzes in the lead up.

The girls’ teams were Holy Trinity P.S., St. Naile’s, Kinawley; St. Mary’s, Maguiresbridge; St. Mary’s, Tempo; St. Mary’s, Teemore and St. Mary’s, Newtownbutler.

The boys’ qualifiers were Holy Trinity P.S., Integrated P.S., St Ninnidh’s Derrylin, St Mary’s Mullymesker, St Macartan’s, Aghadrumsee and St Mary’s Newtownbutler.

There were two groups of three teams in both competitions.

Girls’ Competition

Holy Trinity topped their group with two wins from two against St. Mary’s Maguiresbridge and St. Nailes with the latter also qualifying for the semi final after seeing off St. Mary’s in the other group game.

Teemore and Tempo were the stand out teams in the other group as they qualified from the all ‘St. Mary’s’ group with Newtownbutler just missing out on a last four place.

In the semi-finals Holy Trinity faced Tempo with Teemore playing Kinawley. Tempo won through to the final after a 3-2 to 1-2 victory against a skilful Holy Trinity side.

Luna Murphy had a great battle with Holy Trinity’s Meabh Donnelly throughout while in defence Deirbhile McNabb controlled things for Tempo. Other good performers for Holy Trinity included Mya Greene, Amy Roache and Erin Nolan.

In the other semi-final, Teemore saw off Kinawley by 4-1 to 2-1 with a strong team performance. Cadhla Maguire and Caitlin Cathcart battled hard for St. Naile’s with Niamh McGreevy pulling off some great saves in goal.

The final saw a repeat of the indoor final with St. Mary’s, Tempo up against St. Mary’s, Teemore with Emma Quinlan the Teemore hero with a late goal to secure the title on a score line of 3-1 to 2-2.

Tempo looked as if they had the trophy late in the game after Rua Breen goaled and despite good overall performances from Deirbhile McNabb, Luna Murphy, Casey Campbell and the aforementioned Breen, the final ended in disappointment for them.

Top performers for Teemore were goalkeeper Eimear McBarron, Sarah Reilly in defence, midfielder Cara McCaffrey along with Katie McBarron and match winner Quinlan in attack.

Boys’ Competition

Group A was a really competitive one between Holy Trinity, St. Ninnidh’s, Derrylin and St Macartan’s, Aghadrumsee with each team winning one game. Holy Trinity defeated Derrylin, St. Macartan’s saw off Holy Trinity before St. Ninnidh’s won a close contest with St. Marcartan’s. Score difference was required and this saw St. Macartan’s top the group and Holy Trinity in second place and both went through to the semi final.

St. Mary’s, Newtownbutler and Integrated P.S. were the stand out teams in Group B with both teams defeating St. Mary’s, Mullymesker who had Oisin McGahey as a top performer.

The first semi final proved that goals win games as Integrated P.S. with a scoreline of 4-0 defeating St. Macartan’s who kicked 2-1.

The second semi-final was a thriller between an Ollie He led Newtownbutler and Holy Trinity that required extra time with the Enniskillen lads eventually winning through by 2-9 to 2-2.

Thrilling final

The final was an all Enniskillen affair between Holy Trinity and Integrated P.S.

It was an end to end battle that was all square at the break (0-2 to 0-2).

There were goals galore in the second period that eventually saw Holy Trinity take the title on a 3-4 to 3-2 scoreline with Riley Boyle among the scorers with other top performances from goalkeeper Finn Brewster, Cormac McEvoy and Daithi King.

Despite the best efforts of Integrated P.S. including goalkeeper Jack McAleer who made some great saves, Mike Funston in midfield and goals from Tom McCreesh and Louis Bradley, it wasn’t to be their day.
