Irvinestown 0-11 Teemore 1-13
Teemore claimed the Division Two title at Brewster Park on a perfect afternoon for football on Sunday.
Tony Collins’ side had flirted with promotion the past few years but got over the line in a narrow win over Tempo in their final league fixture.
Both Irvinestown and Teemore went unbeaten in the league with Irvinestown’s win over the Shamrocks, in the Club Players’ Competition, the one-point difference that saw them finish top.
However, it would be Teemore who edged Sunday’s battle with Ronan McCaffrey’s second half goal a key score in the game.
Colm McNally opened the scoring in the first minute via a free with Jarlath Maguire kicking an equaliser two moments later.
Another McNally free was cancelled out by Mattie McDermott as Barry Goodwin and McDermott then made it 0-04 to 0-02 in favour of the St Molaise’s side.
Irvinestown would build in confidence as another score from McDermott was followed by a run down the left wing from Tiarnan Daly who then cut inside to carefully place his shot over to make it 0-06 to 0-02 on 15 minutes.
Irvinestown wouldn’t score for the remainder of the half as Teemore took full advantage of their bright spell to tie the game before the break.
Cian McManus pointed as the Shamrocks then went devastatingly close to an opening goal.
A breakaway saw Oisin Murphy play in Colm McNally whose right-footed shot rocketed off the bar with midfielder Jason McCaffrey then picking up the pieces, and on the turn, his effort struck the posts to the disbelief of the Teemore faithful.
Murphy gathered and fisted over to at least salvage a point from the move, 0-06 to 0-04. Sean McNally watched his free kick from the 45’ sail over the bar with a kick off the ground and the same man would level the game with a mark.
Murphy and Goodwin both had attempts at goal late in the half but the sides went in locked at 0-06 apiece.
Murphy pointed in the opening minute of the second half and McNally sent over another sweetly struck free kick off the green Brewster Park grass.
Ronan Ormsby placed over a free for Irvinestown, despite Teemore’s shouts that it was indirect, following a stop in play through injury.
On 38 minutes, Ronan McCaffrey would go on a driving run through the heart of Irvinestown defence and a left-footed blast with the laces flew into the roof of the net to the joy of the Shamrocks’ spectators.
Ormsby pointed a free to make it 1-08 to 0-08 and Conor O’Hanlon looped over a fantastic free from the right wing to put two between the sides. Teemore had answers again as quickfire points from Aaron Lee, Ronan McCaffrey and Murphy saw them push out in front.
McDermott and Ormsby pointed to leave just a goal in it again but Teemore ended strongly with a free from Aaron Lee and a swing of the left foot from Ronan McCaffrey concluded the scoring as Teemore ran out winners, 1-13 to 0-11.
