Last weekend proved to be a big success for Enniskillen Running Club’s Aoife Farrell as she gold and a bronze at the Ulster Indoors Track and Field Championships which were held at the Mid Ulster Arena in Magherafelt.
On the first day of competition, Farrell lined up in the U16 800m.
In a field that included indoor and outdoor Ulster Champions, Aoife put in a career best performance to take bronze in a very tight finish where two seconds separated the first three runners.
However, this was just the beginning of a memorable weekend for Aoife who returned to the track on Sunday to tackle the 1500m.
In this race she came up against her conqueror in the 800m the previous day plus other stellar opposition.
In a tactical race which saw the field stay together until 300m to go, the Enniskillen Running Club athlete covered all the breaks and kicked for home 200m out coming clear of her rivals to take the gold medal and her first Ulster title.
Aoife has now gained qualification for both 800m and 1500m at the All Ireland indoors in March where she will concentrate on the 1500m.
Clubmate Lucia Warnock made her long awaited return to competition in the U17 200m.
Having been sidelined for several months with injury the Tempo girl ran a great race to finish fourth in her heat, just missing out in qualification for the final.
