Local Fermanagh athletes Conan McCaughey and Denise Toner produced strong performances last weekend at the Irish Novice Cross Country Championships which were held in the grounds of Dundalk IT on Sunday.
McCaughey, who now runs for Derry Track Club, ran a brilliant race as he came home in third place to secure a bronze medal with his club mate John Paul Williamson taking the victory. McCaughey covered the 6km course in a time of 19.12mins to clinch his first ever All Ireland individual medal.
Indeed, there was double joy for McCaughey as Derry Track Club took the silver medal in the team event.
Donagh woman Toner, a European Masters medallist over 800m, who competes for Clones AC, claimed an excellent 11th spot in a top class Women’s field. She covered the fast 4km fast course in 15.15mins which shows that her winter endurance training is right on track.
The juvenile championships were also held on the same course. Unfortunately, Enniskillen Running Club’s Edel Monaghan, who recently medalled at the Ulster U19 Cross Country Championships, was unable to take part due to injury.
