Irvinestown tennis club were the hosts of the popular Veterans tennis championships at the weekend with over 50 competitors from around the province taking part.

From Wednesday on play continued each evening through round robin formats and a few on a knockout basis leaving all the matches being finished up on Saturday and ending with a beautiful meal and presentations in Mahons hotel.

In the over 35s it was local man Mathew McGann who once again showed his dominance at this level when he won his three singles matches in the group finishing with a hard earned victory over Liam Kane from Windsor 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.

Andy Moore, Omagh finished a creditable runner up with victories over Liam Kane and Cathal Sheridan, Cavan.

The ladies 35s singles was won by home club member Andrea Irvine when on Friday evening she beat no 1 seed Orla Malone from Cavan.

On Saturday she claimed the title in a great battle against fellow club member Joanne Daly which went the distance 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 .

Also involved in the group was Brenda Davis, Enniskillen who played some entertaining tennis throuout the event.

35s C Singles was won by Brendan King Irvinestown when he defeated Joe Grimes Cavan 6-4 4-6 10-8 in a great battle of patience and guile from both players.

35 Doubles Winners Mens Doubles Liam Kane & Andy Moore beat Darren Pierce & John Maguire 6-2 7-5 Ladies Doubles Martina Boyd & Sonja Hateboer beat Mary Cuthberson & Andrea Irvine 6-2 6-1 Mixed Doubles Matthew Mc Gann & Sonja Hateboer beat Noel Jackson & Andrea Irvine 7-5 6-3 C Mixed Doubles Brendan King & Joanne Daly beat David Lowe & Doreen Jones 6-2 6-1 In the 45 Singles there was a great battle between Darren Pearce and John Maguire as the final went to the wire.

John took the first set 6-4 with Darren fighting back to take the second 6/1. In the tie breaker both men fought for every point but with some big serves Darren edged it 12-10 to win.

The ladies final was won by Irish Vets international Oonagh Colton when she defeated the galant Rachel Logan 6-1 6-2 with a lot of rallies and patient play.

45 Doubles winners Mens Doubles Stephen Cuthbertson & Darren Pearce beat Godfrey Gaston & John Maguire 6-4 6-4 45 Ladies Doubles Maggie Britton & Rachel Logan beat Fiona Herbst & Doreen Jones 6-1 6-1 45 mixed Doubles Godfrey Gaston & Oonagh Colton beat Mary & Stephen Cuthbertson 6-2 4-6 10-5 The 55 Mens Singles was an all Enniskillen affair between Chris Cieplucha and Jimmy Renfrew. Both men had fought hard to come through their groups to contest the final, after a close first set Chris got the breakthrough to win it 6-3 and then with his precise attacking play surged on to win the second 6-1 but with a lot of good play from both men.

55 Mixed Doubles In a group of three it was Pete Keogh & Kathleen Maguire as winners with Christine & Edwin Johnston as runners up.

At the presentation Club Secretary Tanya Cathcart thanked all the players for taking part, also Mahons Hotel for their sponsorship, the Bawnacre Centre Staff and Fermanagh & Omagh Dostrict Council for their support and finally she thanked the Tournament Committee for the smooth running of the event.
