Treasured memories of my wonderful Auntie Ethel, who was always full of fabulous tales of her amazing adventures from a bygone era – arriving in London during an air raid, and refusing to believe a man who told her the trains ran underground there (I don't think she'd ever left the Clogher Valley before that!), to taking tea with Maharajahs during the last days of the Raj, driving through North Africa in a Morris Minor, sailing down Lake Victoria on a cargo boat, and meeting Sammy Davis Snr in a New York nightclub. She went down into Hitler's bunker at the end of the war and was chased through the streets of Berlin by Russian soldiers when she took a wrong turning. So many stories; she always seemed to me to have a touch of Indiana Jones about her. She was the last of her generation, they don't make them like that any more. She will be greatly missed, always. The photo is from her 80th birthday party, when we made her a cake depicting her as a WAAF sitting on her suitcase.
