A 21-year-old man who attacked a man who bought a woman a drink in a pub has been sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

Kevin Williamson, of Galliagh Park, Enniskillen, pleaded guilty at Fermanagh Court to unlawfully assaulting the man.

He was ordered to pay the injured party £150 compensation.

Williamson is currently serving a seven-month jail sentence for engaging in sexual activity with a under-age girl at her 15th birthday party.

A prosecutor told the court that at 5.45pm on Monday, April 7, the injured party was sitting at the bar in the Lough Inn at The Brook in Enniskillen. Williamson came in and became aggressive, asking who had bought a woman in the bar a drink. The injured party said he had bought the woman a drink. Williamson then approached him and punched him. The man tried to defend himself but was knocked to the ground and punched again. He suffered a cut to his left eye, swelling and bruising to the side of his face and a bruise to the back of his head. He was not aware of who his attacker was but police viewed CCTV from the bar and identified him as Williamson. He was interviewed and made no reply.

Defence barrister Heather Phillips said Williamson has been seen by six psychiatrists and there have been numerous medical reports indicating that he is mildly learning disabled. While the injured party might have seen this as an unprovoked attack it was a misjudgement and misinterpretation of the situation by Williamson. He can act in an impulsive manner and that isn’t his fault.

District Judge Benito Boyd said it was an attack on someone sitting enjoying an evening out.

Imposing a suspended prison sentence, she told Williamson: “If you stay out of trouble that is the end of the matter.”
