Have you have ever wondered what’s under a toadstool or spotted strange shapes growing on a grassy patch recently? They are likely to be some form of fungi.
There are many types of fungus. Waxcaps grow on grasslands, and these red, orange and sometimes yellow beauties act as indicators of an abundant natural diversity. Often on limestone, these grasslands are covered in wildflowers in summer and have much to offer in autumn too.
Ulster Wildlife is hosting a guided grassland walk at Killykeeghan Nature Reserve next Wednesday. On the Marlbank, the walk will be based at the old cottages, about a mile past the entrance to Marble Arch Caves at 10am. Giles Knight of ‘Save our Magnificent Meadows’, will be on hand to look for fungi and other wildlife between 10am and 12am on Wednesday next, November 5.
