SEFF’s seventh Ulster Scots Summer School, attended by over 70 young people, aged seven to 16 years, once again has been hailed a major success.

Over the course of the event, held at Lisnaskea last week, the participants learned about Ulster Scots culture and heritage.

Activities included piping and drumming, crafts, drama, dancing and fiddle playing. There were also contributions from external organisations such as the Lisbellaw and South Fermanagh World War One Society and the PSNI.

The Summer School, which included a day trip to the Somme Centre, Newtownards, ended last Friday afternoon with a family barbecue followed by Highland Games.

Minster Arlene Foster, whose three children attended the Summer School, also dropped in and assisted with the prize-giving, recognising all participants who attended. “All were winners,” said the spokesman.

Kenny Donaldson, Director of Services with SEFF felt “this year’s group really bonded” and he said they were delighted to welcome well over 20 children who hadn’t previously attended the Summer School.

He pointed out: “The Summer School provides a means for the young people to engage with and understand the unique culture and heritage of the Ulster Scots. SEFF is committed to provide further opportunities for young people to celebrate and commemorate culture in a positive and inclusive manner.” He highlighted: “The former Lisnaskea High School offered a wonderful backdrop for the Summer School and there was a real buzz and energy present last week which the organisation would hope to bottle and use in the coming months and years in best promoting the site as a hub for community and economic development.” Mr. Donaldson continued: “The organisation thanks all those who contributed in any way to making the Summer School such a resounding success.” Among those acknowledged were leaders, workshop facilitators, other volunteers and most importantly, the young people themselves.

SEFF concluded by thanking “the funders: Ulster Scots Agency and Fermanagh and Omagh Council for the funding investment in the initiative.” SEFF reminds the public that further Summer Schools will be held this month, August, including a Drama Summer School (running this week in partnership with Brookeborough Primary School) and a Residential Summer School, Friday, August 14, to Sunday, August 16. SEFF’s Residential Summer School, to be held at Roscor Youth Village, Belleek, is open to 12 to 16 years. The weekend will incorporate a range of activities including Living History, music and dancing, sports, drama, and outdoor pursuits including water sports.
